Roxanne Joyal is an experienced international development practitioner and leadership specialist with legal
expertise. She is a founding staff member at Free The Children, the world’s largest network of children helping
children through education, and a head facilitator at Leaders Today, the world’s top youth
leadership training organization.
Now 30 years old, Roxanne is a Stanford University graduate and Rhodes Scholar with a law
degree from Oxford.
In her work with Free The Children, Roxanne’s leadership role has contributed to the
organization’s many accomplishments in the areas of education, alternative income, healthcare,
water and sanitation provision and peace building which have earned Free The Children three
Nobel Peace Prize nominations, The organization also facilitated high profile partnerships with

Dr. Marla Shapiro is a well-known medical contributor who completed medical school at McGill University and
trained at the University of Toronto for her Masters of Health Science in Community Health and Epidemiology. She
concluded her specialty training in Community Medicine receiving her Fellowship in Community Medicine from
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family
and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and is in private practice.
Dr. Shapiro has contributed her medical expertise to several national TV shows. Currently she serves as the Health and
Medical Contributor for CTV's Canada AM. She is seen on Newsnet and as the medical consultant on CTV's National
News with Lloyd Robertson. 2003 saw the exciting addition of Balance: Television for Living Well, in which Dr. Shapiro
appears as host. This refreshing daily health and lifestyle show is seen across North American households and has sold
internationally.
Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the 2005 Media Award from the North American Menopause Society for her work in
expanding the understanding of menopause, and won the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada/
Canadian Foundation for Women's Health Award for Excellence in Women's Health Journalism in 2006 for her
documentary "Run Your Own Race". She is the author of "Life in the Balance: My Journey with Breast Cancer".

JAN DAMERY, MA, BA
Jan holds a Master of Arts Degree in Economics from
the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor
of Arts with Honors Degree in Economics from the
University of Alberta. Jan currently represents the Aga
Khan University in Canada. Previous to this she has
worked with the Alberta Department of Energy for
three years and TransCanada Corporation for over ten
years. She also became a sessional lecturer with the
University of Alberta immediately following graduate
school. Jan more recently was the Senior Director
of Campaign and Resource Development with the
United Way of Calgary and Area between 2001 and
2006. Under her leadership, the campaign doubled its
contribution to the social infrastructure of Calgary by
achieving $50 million in 2006. Jan will speak to the
incredible experiences she has had whilst volunteering
and working in the last year in the countries of Kenya,
Tanzania, Zanzibar, Pakistan and Afghanistan. She
will explore how Calgarian women can get involved
and give back. Jan will educate the group on the Aga
Khan University, the Aga Khan Development Network
and its various programs available for volunteering and
supporting the developing world. Jan will talk about
her women encouraging women initiative in detail.
